Make sure health reform includes basic health care for women

The Senate Finance Committee has been drafting a health care reform bill and struggling to create legislation that will have bipartisan support. Chairman Max Baucus of Montana has crafted a number of compromises in an effort to win Republican support. One compromise that may be under consideration is to exclude abortion services from coverage by some or all insurance plans in the Health Insurance Exchange.

We must let the Senate know that women want health care reform that includes the comprehensive care that we need throughout our lives. Tell them reproductive health care must be treated like other primary and preventive care. And that politicians shouldn’t be making the decisions about what’s included in a health benefits package. Women are strong supporters of quality, affordable health care for all – but it has to be health care that covers the reproductive health services we need. Urge your Senators to tell Senator Baucus that health coverage decisions should be based on science and guided by medical standards of care, not by politics.
